A Gay Icon A Day...Bette Midler


Era: 80's through today

Who is she:  Bette Midler was born in Hawaii and moved to NYC at an early age.  She is an actress, singer, and comic.  She first appeared on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof and has appeared in numerous movie productions and has several hit albums.  She continues to have success to this day.

Why is she an icon:  Bette got her start singing in gay bathhouses in New York and Barry Manilow was her accompanist on the piano during her bathhouse days.  She earned the nickname Bath House Betty and is also known in the gay community as "The Divine Miss M."
