Why was she an icon: Marlene was very controversial in her time. She was rumored to favor the Nazi party during the World War and was also bisexual. It was said that she enjoyed the gay life in Germany and was quite open about it considering the time period. She was controversial, a bit of a martyr, openly bisexual, and full of glitz and glam on the stage. Her voice was quite unique too. She had a very deep sultry tone which made her unique.
